The story

Winterberg's track opened in 1977 in the Sauerland hills. It has hosted World Championships in bobsleigh, skeleton and luge, including the first two-woman bob Worlds in 2000, and its start area was rebuilt in 2006. It is also the track that steps in when others fail: in December 2025 it took over the luge World Cup opener after Igls could not get approval.

  • Turn 7, the Veltins Kreisel, is named after a local brewery.
  • Friedrich set both the two-man and four-man track records here in 2024.
  • It hosted the luge World Championships in 1989, 1991 and 2019.
