FIL men's luge figure, with the drop from the bob start. The operator gives 1,200 m from the men's start and a 111.5 m drop. The local history dates initial work to 1983, a thirteen-bend opening to December 1986 and completion of the upper course to spring 1988. Other accounts give a 1984–1986 build period.

The story

Sigulda's track opened in 1986 above the Gauja valley, when Latvia was part of the Soviet Union. It was designed first for luge, with a steep first upper curve, and four-man bobs cannot race on it, so it has never held a bobsleigh World Championship. Luge is its strength: it hosted the luge World Championships in 2003 and 2015 and several European Championships. Two-man bob and skeleton World Cups still visit.

  • Four-man bobs cannot race here, so Sigulda has never staged a bobsleigh World Championship.
  • Kristers Aparjods set the men's luge track record of 47.493 s on 3 March 2024.
