The story

This reinforced-concrete track on Mount Teine hosted the bobsleigh events of the 1972 Sapporo Winter Olympics. It cost 433 million yen and continued to host the All-Japan Bobsleigh Championships through 1996. Sapporo city says it became dormant after Japanese training and races moved to Nagano in 1998. Its finish house, topped with Olympic rings, still stood as a ruin in 2012 and had been removed by 2024.

  • Sixty ice workers took 20 days to lay its 13.5 cm coat of ice, lit by 127 lamps.
  • Its ring-topped finish house was still standing as a ruin in 2012, more than a decade after closure.

Today

Nothing of the track is left; its finish house, crowned with Olympic rings, stood as a ruin after closure and had been removed by 2024.
