The story

Altenberg's track was built in the Ore Mountains near the Czech border between 1981 and 1986, when the town was in East Germany. It is reputed to be one of the hardest tracks to drive, with a labyrinth of tight curves leading into a 320-degree Kreisel at turn 10. It has hosted many bobsleigh, skeleton and luge World Championships, most recently the luge Worlds in 2024.

  • The Kreisel at turn 10 carries the sled through 320 degrees.
  • Curves 11 and 12 were rebuilt after the first trial runs in 1983.
  • Autumn 2025 began the track's 40th ice season.

Today

A refrigerated track of 17 curves, refurbished in 2012, that still opens every autumn for its ice season.
