The story

Sledding in Oberhof, in the Thuringian Forest, goes back to the early 1900s, and the town staged the first two-man bob World Championships in 1931 on an older run. The present track opened in 1971, in East Germany, and was rebuilt from scratch in 1996. A roof over much of the track was completed in 2022. It is above all a luge track and has hosted luge World Championships from 1973 to 2023.

  • In January 2026 it staged the first European Championships in mixed luge events.
  • Felix Loch's men's luge track record of 44.996 s dates from 2008.
  • Roofing work over the track ran until July 2022, and the finished work was handed over that November.
